Why is this balance so hard to find? Because in daily life, we rarely practice both at once. We work without relaxing. We rest without directing the mind. The middle way asks us to do something we almost never do: hold both simultaneously.

Knowing moderation is knowing the right time — when to work, when to eat, when to rest — and never confusing them.

A quality that helps the mind return to balance is what the monk calls knowing moderation. This is more than self-discipline — it is a kind of situational wisdom. It means knowing when it is time to exert yourself, and when it is time to soften. The Virus of Delusion
